💖It’s National Love Your Server Day!

Today is National Love Your Server Day where we uplift workers across the country on 02/13 and stand in solidarity with service workers to shine a light on the $2.13 federal subminimum wage. We know that tipped workers across the industry deserve to make a livable wage with tips on top. In the current cost of living crisis, no one can live on $2.13 an hour - and service workers deserve to be seen and valued for their labor.

Did you know?
Tipping in the U.S. is rooted in racism and like many systems and institutions in the US, its origin is entrenched in inequity. After the Civil War, instead of paying newly emancipated slaves fair wages, the restaurant and hospitality industries opted to have them rely on gratuities - or tips - to receive their income. Workers of color still suffer the consequences of this legacy today. It's high time for service workers to be paid a livable wage based on the value of their hard work—not one based on a legacy of slavery.

Trump’s Misleading ‘No Tax on Tips’ Policy

Recently, Trump announced his ‘No Tax on Tips’ policy which he claims will benefit workers - but we know that’s not true, and in reality it leaves two thirds of workers out. Tax deductions don’t work if tipped workers don’t make enough to actually file taxes. In order to file for taxes, tipped workers need to make above a certain threshold which service workers don't meet. If they really want to help them, tipped workers should be paid a full minimum wage plus tips on top!

No one can live on $2.13 an hour. ‘No Tax on Tips’ is a distraction—fair wages are the real solution. That’s why today on Love Your Server Day we announced the TIPS Act with Representative Steven Horsford in Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.!

Research has shown that restaurants flourish in states with a full minimum wage for tipped workers.  We must stop with scarcity policies that hold working Americans down. Click here to sign our petition!
